Day 15 – The Flying Bath

I’m sure anyone reading this blog will recognise the name Julia Donaldson, which is why I was really surprised to find today’s choice, with illustration by David Roberts (who drew our favourite dinosaur!), in Poundland. Needless to say it was snapped up and today had its first read.

The story is about 3 toys who take advantage of an empty house to fill a flying bath with water and then answer calls from animals in need!

The main line of the book is repeated every time they answer a call – “Wings out and off we fly. The Flying Bath is in the sky!” Tobias was joining in with my cries of this line by the middle of the story and, at the end, he could even finish the line off for me!

The toys visit a kangaroo with a thirst, help a bee water his flowers, give a pig a wash, put a fire out in a baboon’s tree and rescue a fish from a pond suffering drought. Helping is always a nice message in a children’s book and here this is reinforced by the toys receiving something back from all those they help – usually in the form of a game.

In my opinion, you very rarely see a miss from Julia Donaldson and this book is no different. Excellent rhyme, lots of fun, an important message and easy for toddlers to join in! The illustrations have loads going on and really add to the story. An excellent book. 5/5

Tobias is testament to the quality here as the moment I said, “the end,” he responded with, “AGAIN!” He also told me, “my bath need wings and my want bath is in the sky (there is part of the main line!) but my down here.” I’m hoping he remembers this for bath time!
