Day #154: Buy Some New Pets

While walking around PetSmart today at lunch, I bought some things on a whim. That’s the best way to rock your world and make life a bit more interesting. Spontaneouty speaks!

When I arrived at work, I held up the box and let my fun teammates at the Vessel take guesses as to the contents. Among the responses were “snake” and “rat.” Shannon even had sneaking suspicions about some kind of eight-legged creature that I don’t even want to think about. While she was bent over, trying to peer into the holes, Ally stood up from her chair and that was enough to make poor Shannon nearly jump out of her skittish skin.

Alas, we had the big reveal and everyone was very relieved to see my two sweet guys. Meet Lennon and McCartney.

Lennon is the cool guy down in the corner, and McCartney has the awesome hairdo. These finches make some really beautiful music together.

And, to my surprise and delight, it had totally escaped my mind that today is National Bird Day. What better way to celebrate than to go out and adopt a couple of sweet bird babies to add to your family tree? Since most of the trees in my family are full of nuts, I consider this a win for me.

Although putting the cage together was a challenge, I toughed it out like a lost man: without the directions.

I think I did alright with a little help from my friends.

Tonight, these guys are chill with just about anything. They’ve been in the car twice, chased with a net by a PetSmart employee, dumped from a box into a cage, and then even had to endure Jack’s outrageous reaction to them. (Jack is very beside himself about this whole bird thing; he is insanely jealous and even went into growling fits and a whole barking tantrum.) After supper, though, I came upstairs and talked to these wee little guys, and I realized just how social they really are. They chirped back at me and even flew to the front of the cage by the door to get closer to me.

All in all, it’s been a good day. And it’s going to be an even greater weekend.

Do you know how I know?

A little birdie told me.
