review 1: Yes, the Catholic Church affects change...at a glacial pace...and it's not to happen in this story. It helps to have a Catholic background, complete with the "Catholic" guilt part, to appreciate the main character's futile push for change. However, after hoping against hope that he has imagined a unique answer to the heart of the character's dilemma, the author collapses into the most mundane of endings. Yes, it's one of the great mysteries of the faith but, nonetheless, a disappointment for a story that showed promise of a new beginning for the Church, even if only in a fictional world!
review 2: I picked this book up at the library on a whim. As a Catholic sometimes I like to read about the intrigue in the church. And this book certainly had it. Cynthia, th
... moree main character, is a passionate follower and someone who has a highly developed sense of faith. She has visions and spells that compel her to follow her dream to become the first woman priest. As I read this book, I was convinced that it would be a nice little book with some great passages of Cynthia's inner struggles. And it certainly was that. The plot was a little hard to believe, but when she describes how she is driven by her visions and by what God has told her, you have no problem understanding. The amazing and surprising end of the book was totally unexpected and has set up, what I have to think, will be a very dramatic series of books. Well done! less
