This afternoon, Nadine Hays Pisani accepted my friend request on Facebook. Last month, Tommy Wallach did too. Who are these people? Only the most amazing authors I’ve been reading lately.
Nadine Pisani is my idol these days. When she became sick and tired of mundane living here in the States, she and her husband, Rob, sold everything they owned and relocated for an incredible, adventurous life in Costa Rica. She has written a series of books under the title “Happier Than A Billionaire” that are captivating, endearing accounts of her daily adventures.
Tommy Wallach. Who is he? He’s a freaking New York Times best-selling author, Baby! I just finished reading “We All Looked Up” – an awesome book about an asteroid headed to Earth and how a group of teenagers react in the face of pending doom. It’s a real eye-opener as to how humanity would spend its time if people could only grasp how fleeting our limited moments are.
I’ve been filling my library with titles along these lines lately. It’s all in my quest to find my own truth.
I figure I should start following and befriending folks who really know how to live – people who have worked up the courage to chase their dreams, even if those dreams are all the way down in Costa Rica or out west in sunny California. Nadine and Tommy did not become accomplished widely-read authors by constantly worrying about what everyone else around them thought; they were too busy being true to themselves.
I’ve come a little ways myself. Far from those rotten high school days when you spot a crowd of the really cool, popular and pretty people standing around in a circle chatting, and you walk up and try to stand close to them. You find the biggest gap between two shoulders and poke your little, nobody head inside. But not too far inside for fear that one of them might notice you and blurt out “What do you think you’re doing, Freak!”
You see, I no longer care what people think of me. I passed the point of vanity and pride a long, long time ago. Yes, way before this past week when I tried to “cup” the wrinkles off my face and am now left with a big ole hickey on my forehead.
Can you imagine walking the halls of Claysburg-Kimmel High School with this sucker on your face?
These days, I live to please myself and it’s all because of the powerful words of authors like my newfound “friends.” This blog started because of Chris Guillebeau, and it continues every day because more and more people are learning to live fearlessly.
What’s more is that they’re writing about it – to give hope to you and me, so that we all might get to embrace what it is to be human.
