review 1: A gripping whodunit of the classical school. This is a very good book. A complicated plot, of which the author is in complete control throughout. There isn't a single "nice" character in it, with the possible exception of Lydia, but the characters who are here are fully conceived and well drawn. A fine grasp of the historical and political atmosphere of the time. Written by a literate author for literate readers. Strongly recommended.
review 2: This book sort of turned up on my doorstep and I have such a hard time refusing lost puppies and books. ... morebe one of those books that you find hard to put down. I can't really tell what the book is about, it had more layers and stories hid within... but they were all the kind that grab hold, even the ones around the not so pleasant characters. What stays with me after finishing the book is a surprisingly real feeling of a foggy London and the countryside - and it just won't let go. I like it. less
