review 1: Sometimes a person can lose what makes them special in the eyes of others. While the author demonstrates this in a rather unconventional way, not to mention one that barely makes sense, the lesson she teaches is very good, and handled in a manner that children will find approachable.Without his "M", this monster is only an onster, so he does his best to try and find himself. He acts like someone he isn't, he tries to fit in, only to discover that it doesn't feel right. Teasing and embarrassment chases him away from his monster gang, into the arms of true friends who like him for who he is. Any mention of teasing is not described in any depth, which allows this book to keep a rather heavy and serious topic lighter. Also of help in this, is a colourful, and bright appearance... more with whimsically designed characters. There are some people in this world that are mean to others, and while the author provides no solution for dealing with them, she does show that there are others that are kind. For any child having difficulties with bullies, this story is meant to provide hope.
review 2: Monsters are known for their terrifying characteristics. In this story, Monster loses his meanness (M); therefore, he becomes an Onster. With losing his meanness, he loses his other monster friends. His old friends make fun of him and he becomes sad, so Onster decides to befriend human kids. His new friends are accepting of who he is, but as his old monster friends continue to make fun of him, he tries one last time to be a scary monster but fails. He realizes that his new friends do not care that he has lost his meanness and they like him for who he is, Onster. Love this book! Cute illustrations and could be used to introduce rhyming. It could also be used to discuss accepting of others. less
