Daybreak

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
Let us pray with one heart and mind.

So begins the liturgy for Morning Prayer.

I have always loved these words.
They are a pause in the bustle of morning; a reminder of the movement of time as Earth spins: again, again, again, from darkness to light.
They are a promise of possibility; a hint of something unexpected: words of freedom to those who are bound by the darkness of the night.

As night turns to day, so darkness always passes.
Light forms, rises, dazzles, dims and dies.
Then forms and rises once more.

And whatever we face, in light or in darkness, we face in the company of all who turn their hearts to prayer at the dawn of the day.

The night has passed.
Advent has passed.

The day lies open.
The Christmas season, and the New Year, lie ahead.

Let us pray as one.
