review 1: This was a slightly different approach with delineated storytelling that sees two different Grace investigations separated by ten or so years. Both dealing with the same perpetrator, the Shoe Man. We are introduced to several potential culprits and begin to look for similarities between them in both time scales. Are both Shoe Men the same or is there a copycat? Can Grace pin him down this time, where he failed before? The classic third twist is there and I am hoping leads to a resurrection in a future Grace story. We learn a lot about the younger Grace and what may have compelled his wife to vanish. The story telling is taught and tense and the climax set in the creepy old cement works fantastic. Believe me, I know these buildings, they exist, whenever I drive past them n... moreow I take a second look, such is the power of imagery!!
review 2: I liked it and didn't.....The first 200+ pages annoyed me with their flashbacks and time shifts--1997--now--1997--now--and then 1979!! What???? The suspense was very good. I was constantly trying to figure out just who was guilty of what! And I even appreciated the unsettled feeling I was left with when I finished. Shouldn't you feel unsettled when the subject is serial rape? I appreciated the story of the detective. The is still the unsolved mystery of the disappearance of his first wife which makes me curious to read another book that would hopefully explore that occurrence. It just took me sooooooo long to get engaged in the telling and the time shifts were so distracting. less
