Okay flock, I’m about to blow your mind.
I have definitive proof that Jane Porter from Tarzan is from Niagara Falls.
…at least, her family is from Niagara Falls.
Let me explain.
The Porters of NiagaraIn the early 1800s, the state of New York began to sell land along the Niagara River. A man by the name of Augustus Porter, along with his brother Peter, bought some of this land, and made a mill.
They then proceeded to own most of the area.
I’m not kidding: the Porter name stretched across what is now the city of Niagara Falls, NY.
Of course, that’s not important. What’s important are Augustus Porter’s children. He had six, one of whom was a daughter by the name of Jane S. Porter (born 1816).
He also had a son, Augustus S. Porter. He also had a daughter named Jane (born 1833).
Now, both of these Janes would be too old to be the Jane, but we know something else: some of Augustus S’s descendants ended up in England.
In fact, the Porter family was changed in name to the Porter-Burrall family in 1886 by none other than Queen Victoria! The same Queen Victoria that Jane was bringing Tarzan to meet in the film.
There are even scientists in the Porter family, with Frederick A. P. Porter being a deaf scientist and educator.
Some issuesOf course, Jane’s father being Archimedes Porter is a snag. There’s no Archimedes named in the Porter family tree. There’s a lot missing within the tree, however, and it is possible to assume that one of the original Porters (either Augustus or Peter) had family that moved to England, and produced Archimedes (and eventually Jane).
What does this mean?Well, if Jane Porter is related to the Niagara Porters, she has a long bloodline that includes many politicians, war heroes, and my favorite, owners of most of Niagara Falls through the early 1900s.
