review 1: Enjoyable historical fiction. This book focuses on the battles in Chattanooga after the Battle of Chickamauga. The book looks at one of the major battles of the Civil War in the west, which tend to get overlooked in summaries of the Civil War.Shaara helps the reader understand what the war felt like to on a daily basis for the soldiers. This was a battle and landscape I knew, and Shaara took me back to where I could imagine what it was like there in 1863.
review 2: This is, I think, Jeff Shaara's 13th book. Since his first book, I have picked up and read all of his books as soon as they have come out. Shaara writes historical novels. His books are solid history. But the word "novels" must be used in describing his work, as Shaara insists on having historical ch
... morearacters use dialogue in the text. This is out of necessity -- the dialogue is the author's invention, but well researched and matched to specific historic personalities; which makes them real people that you care about. Or not. As far as historical novelists go, there is nobody better than Shaara. "The Smoke At Dawn" is one of Shaara's US Civil War series. This book is about the November 1863 battle of Chattanooga. A battle that was 'accidentally' won by Federal troops who wilfully disobeyed direct orders from their commanders and surprisingly advanced instead of retreated.Almost, but not quite all, of everything I now understand about The US Civil War -- a goodly amount! -- I learned from Jeff Shaara. He quite often inspires me to read historic texts and articles about stuff that I have read in his books. As long as Shaara keeps writing books, I will always have a new book to look forward to. less
