review 1: Loved this quietly capacious novel about coming to terms with deep loss. It is well grounded in a regional sensibility and yet still follows through on its claim to speak to a much broader world. The religious themes are tactfully dealt with, as is the heroine's struggle to find her way in a new marriage despite a history of emotional deprivation. The novel as a whole is wise, calm, and quietly deep. A good read on a stormy day.
review 2: I think this was a very well written book, as many others have commented. However, I look to a fictional story to entertain me in one way or another. I did not like any of the characters, so could not get really engaged in the outcome of the story. I'm happy that all 3 main characters discovered something about themselve
... mores, and others, in the end. It's a quick read, so you should probably take a chance on it. less

A dismal tale... with dismal characters and a dismal ending.

A gut-punch of a book. Sparse, clean, and riveting.
