Edwin’s Christening

Yay! We had such a lovely day celebrating Edwin’s Christening. It really meant a lot to me to get him christened into my church and have our family and closest friends there to celebrate with us.

First of all, the dress. Edwin’s Christening Gown is an heirloom gown handed down from my husband’s family. My husband’s Grandad, wore this gown when he was Christened and we believe his Mother may have done so too. So this gown has been worn by Edwin, his Great Grandad, and possibly his Great Great Grandmother. He is also named after his Great Grandad so it is a very special gown for him to wear. It is white lace and has an underskirt with it and it is really beautiful. My Mum managed to clean it up and starch it and it came out really well. Here is a link to a post I wrote during my pregnancy when My mum had cleaned up the gown: Pregnancy Diary June

With the gown you also need a shawl, it becomes part of the ceremony so a shawl is needed for a Christening. I also have a very special shawl given to me by my Aunty on my Wedding Day. There is a bit of a long story behind the shawl. It is Shetland Lace and the shawls are traditionally said to be so fine that it can pass through a wedding ring. My Aunty made me this for me because my Grandma, who I allude to a lot in this blog as she was very special to me, was a very talented knitter and general crafter. She started making a Shetland Lace shawl each for me and my sister and her plan was to make us both one to have on our wedding day. Unfortunately she got very ill and died before she could finish the first one, so my Aunty said she would have a go at finishing the first one and making a new one for me from the same pattern. She completed it in New Zealand where she lives, and brought it for me for my wedding day. So it is a very special shawl and is surprising very cosy. I thought it would be perfect for his christening day.

For his after party he had a white dungaree set that I was given by a friend when I first found out I was pregnant. So Edwin had a very sentimental day all round.

After the ceremony in our local church, where we got married and I attend mass each week, we went to a local mill called The Vale that has been converted into a Community Art Centre and Cinema. It’s a very cool venue and my Dad, who does a lot of art installation work, works here a lot. I heard they were branching out into an event venue so I thought I would give it a try. All we had to do was decorate it ourselves so I used this online company called Party Delights and bought a load of balloons with helium, pom pom bunting, large pom poms, bunting and banners its a great party website. My parents, husband and I then decorated the room on the Saturday and added daffodils and roses to the tables. I was up at 8am putting helium in balloons on the day of the Christening but it was worth it!

The Vale make large art installations so aome of their puppets were out on display which I loved. I was so happy with the room in the end it really had a personal touch. The Vale also have their own bar so you could pay for drinks on the day. My husband and I also put on a glass of fizz for each guest on arrival to celebrate. I hired in a buffet from a local company Sizzlers Catering and they put on a very generous and tasy spread including Hog Roast Sandwiches which is my absolute favourite.

My very talented friend of mine made Edwin’s cake, and it was delicious. It was a jam and cream filling and you can see how gorgeous it looked with a little blue Teddy Bear Topper I also bought from Party Delights. You can see her other cakes with her @shellshomebaking on Instagram.

Edwin also received some absolutely beautiful gifts from Peter Rabbit plates, handmade ornaments and even a star! Edwin has his own star in the sky! We were so lucky and so so touched by the beautiful presents.

We had a beautiful day for Edwin, sharing it with our friends and family and I really feel like it has started our life as parents, putting a lot of the nastiness and difficult times we have behind us. I really hope our guests had a good day too and I am really grateful to everyone who came and who helped us make it happen. A special day all round.
