Happy Wednesday everyone! As a wedding photographer, I get asked quite often from my clients about how to prepare for an engagement photoshoot. Of course, photography is an essential way to capture a special moment with the love of your life, so we want to make sure the photos turn out PERFECT. So here is a list of my personal advice to you.
MAKE IT PERSONALLY RELEVANTEngagement photos are very personal. When you are picking out a theme and a location, keep in mind that you want to make it is personally relevant to you and your partner. Think about what makes you and your partner unique because it is all about telling a story. For example, this couple met in downtown Denton, so they decided to take photos there. They also love playing Wiffle Ball together, so they brought a couple of props for the shoot.
FIND A LOCATION THAT IS SPECIAL AND UNIQUE TO YOUOnce you figure out a theme for your photoshoot, think about the location that you want to shoot your photos. For instance, this couple enjoys riding bikes and hiking a lot, so they decided to shoot their engagement photos at one of their favorite locations. The location that you and your partner choose will change the style and feeling of the photos. Make sure you have two or three background ideas in mind, so your photographer has a better understanding and can plan appropriately for your shoot.
PLEASE MAKE AN EFFORTPlease make an effort by bringing at least two outfits to the shoot. One should be a semi-casual outfit and the other should be a formal outfit for a romantic shoot. If possible, hire a stylist and a MUA to help you make this day extra special. The great thing about hiring a MUA is that you can use this day as a trial run for your makeup.
COORDINATE OUTFITS WITH YOUR PARTNERYou and your partner shouldn’t wear same colors, but it is important to coordinate complementary outfits with your partner. If you are going for a more formal shoot, both of you should be wearing something formal and visa versa. Having complementary outfits will make you look unified as one.
GET TO KNOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHERPeople hire photographers to capture the moment. So, photographers want to hear about your love story and what you want to accomplish from the shoot. It is important to talk to your photographer and get to know him or her prior to the shoot. The more you communicate, the better he or she will be at taking perfect photos of you.
FOCUS ON BEING PRESENT DURING THE SHOOTHave fun and enjoy every moment with your partner while the photographer is taking your engagement photos. Don’t worry about how you look in the photos. Trust your photographer that he or she will take photos that you are looking for. Relax and most importantly, enjoy your very special day!
PLAN A DATE AFTER YOUR SHOOTWhat a great way to end a photoshoot! Since you are already dolled up for the shoot, why don’t you and your partner plan a nice dinner date afterwards? Love and romance are in the air, so end the day with something extra special.
LADIES, BRING FLATS TO WALK IN!We all agree that heels make women feel and look sexy and beautiful. However, there will be times when you have to walk further than expected to get to the photoshoot location. In order to avoid hurting yourself, bring flats or comfortable shoes to walk in.
MAKE SURE TO EAT BEFORE THE SHOOTSometimes, photoshoots can take longer than anticipated so it is important to have a full meal beforehand. Make sure and drink plenty of water as well, since you will be doing a lot of laughing, walking and talking. It will also help you stay focused during the shoot because you won’t be thinking about a cheeseburger or pizza while posing with your partner!
IF POSSIBLE, BRING AN ASSISTANTIf you have a close friend or a family member who can assist you with the photoshoot, please bring him or her with you! It will help you, your partner and the photographer because he or she can make sure your outfit looks good, your hair is parted right and your makeup looks flawless. It will be a huge help to have someone there at all times.
With a little bit of planning and preparation, you will be well on your way to executing the perfect engagement photoshoot. Thanks for stopping by and Happy Wedding Planning!
