Ever After

Ever after is a 1998 adaption of Cinderella, and the so- called ‘true story’ behind the fairy tale. The casting was well done I thought, with Drew Barrymore playing Danielle (Cinderella), Dougray Scott as the handsome Prince Henry, and Angelica Housten as the evil Stepmother.
I found this adaption enjoyable. It’s one of those movies you can watch over and over – and yes, I own this DVD! It’s a good, light, chick flick.
The costumes and hairstyles were beautifully done and add depth to the characters. The actors all added great dimension to their characters and were believable.
That soundtrack is gorgeous and truly adds to the story.
I have to emphasise that this is not a Disney movie like the 2015 Cinderella adaption. There are no mice, or fairy Godmother or magic – that’s because this is realistic, it’s not meant to be a replication of the classic Cinderella. However, I really loved the inclusion of the shoes. That really is something special to the story of Cinderella and I’m glad they kept that.

I also love at the beginning the movie starts with the Brothers Grimm finding out that the classic tale of Cinderella actually came from a story in history, and then the story begins in the past. Beautifully done. And Patrick Godfrey is wonderful in the role of Leonardo Da Vinci who fills the role of the ‘Fairy Godmother’ by assisting Danielle to the ball. In his words ‘I will go down in history as the man who opened a door.’ There is definitely humour and wit in this film.

“Just Breathe”

The outfit Cinderella wears to the ball is beautiful and simple and symbolic. Truly, now she can ‘fly.’ The chemistry between Cinderella and the Prince was very good. I felt there was a lot more depth in their relationship than in the 2015 Cinderella adaption, and in this movie they really drew out the personalities of both Danielle & the Prince. I was so happy to see this. At times Drew Barrymore’s accent faltered, but it wasn’t a big frustration. However, I must say if you are a stickler for historical accuracy you will find a few faults with this film. For example, the book Utopia was published in 1525 while Da Vinci died in 1519. But historical accuracies aside, it’s a great film.

The filming locations were fantastic! I would recommend this to anyone who loves period drama/ historical films etc. It really is a film that can be enjoyed by a wide group of people. What did you think of this film?
