Nonromantic-romantic is that one act– beyond the frivolous candy hearts, flowers, kisses, sex, and over-the-top declarations of love– that reveals the real depth of feeling and connection between two people. It’s that quiet, simple scene that has the greatest impact. It’s the reminder that love isn’t just explosions and drama, but the small considerations that truly define a relationship. This type of scene isn’t traditionally romantic, but damn every time you read/watch it it brings a tear to your eye and melts your heart.
So what is your favorite nonromantic-romantic scene in a book and in a movie?
I’ll start us off, but BEWARE there may be some spoilers ahead.
My favorite nonromantic-romantic book scene is in Patricia Brigg’s Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, book 4). It’s not even a paranormal romance, I believe it’s urban fantasy, but I love Mercy and Adam’s relationship; it was a long time coming. I don’t like to give too much away, so all I’ll say is Adam takes Mercy’s place as food for her vampire friend. The way he does it, the emotions, it gets me every time. Every. Time.
“It was strangely intimate, Stefan holding me as he drank from Adam’s wrist, and Adam leaning harder into me as Stefan fed.” Mercy Thompson, Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs. BTW, if you haven’t read this series, you absolutely have to; it’s awesome.
Okay, now for the nonromantic-romantic scene in a movie. Definitely has to be in Pretty Woman. I know it’s technically a chick flick with lots of romantic moments, but there’s this one when you realize that he feels more for her than even he realizes. Maybe it’s even the moment he falls in love with her and he just doesn’t know it yet. Right after he was acting like a jealous douche and she leaves the penthouse, Edward stops her out at the elevator and apologizes to keep her from leaving him. Vivian: “We were just talking.” Edward: “I didn’t like it.” And yes, I am quoting them from memory.
Y’all have any favorite nonromantic-romantic scenes?
