When Jason Milwaukee’s best friend Sunshine vanishes, Jason knows that something is terribly wrong, but solving her disappearance will require pushing through all the voices in his head and then getting the world to listen to him. His schizophrenia is stopping him from remembering the events leading up to her disappearance, and often he discounts his own memories, and his own impressions. But his deep knowledge that he would never hurt his friend, plus the faith of his parents and a few others in the town bring him to the point of solving the mystery. In the end, it’s Sunshine’s own love for Jason (Freak) that persuades him of his own strength and goodness.
I really wanted to have this book after I saw it for only €3 at a book market. I didn’t take it because the cover was that pretty, but it had something that attracted me. However, I bought the books because I had never read a story like that before and it sounded very interesting.
In the book you follow a guy named Jason, who also listens to Freak. He is in a special class for “Alphabet”children with his friends. Every day is almost the same for then until his father gets a message that Sunshine didn’t come home.
At that moment the story really starts. You read about Jason, his friend Drip, their family’s and the FBI during the search for Sunshine. You get to know every character a little, but it’s mostly about the friendship between the 3 children.
While Jason and Drip’s medications slowly stop working the clock keep ticking. They were told that the forst 24 hours are the most important, so they really don’t want to fall asleep. The longer she’s missing, the more people start thinking that Jason had something to do with it. Even he doesn’t know if he did something anymore.
In the story you are get to know the other characters. Everyone has his own problem which is revealed during the search. Who had something to do with Shunshine’s disappearance and will she come back?
If you’re looking for a funny, exciting, but also a bit sad books you really should try this one. Je read from a person with schizophrenia, so you get to know a lot about this. In the begining it takes a little effort to read in multiple voices, but it’s definatly worth it.
