I’ve been thinking about binaries in poetry lately and came across two gems to share.

One is Non-Written Words by Czech poet Ladislav Nebeský. Here’s a link and if you want to know more. As a taste I’ve copied his Invisible words example 1 below. (The idea is that  reading down each column, you can infer the missing letters ‘p’, ‘o’, ‘e’, and ‘m’ in the line between the two groups.)

l……k….a….i
m….l….b….j
n…..m….c….k
o…..n….d….l

q….p….f….n
r….q….g….o
s….r….h….p
t….s….i….q

The second is Cate Kennedy, Australian poet’s take on binaries…

Taken from the collection ‘The Taste of River Water: new and selected poems’ by Cate Kennedy published May 2011 by Scribe and available in all good bookshops. Poem read by author.
