Garry’s Pick of the Week: Darth Vader #10

Shortly after the execution of “Order 66,” Emperor Palpatine has ordered his Sith apprentice to lead the Inquisitiorius in their quest to seek out and eliminate all remaining Jedi without prejudice.

Jocasta Nu, lead archivist of the Jedi Order, has absconded with a secret data listing all force sensitive children in the galaxy from the ruins of the Jedi Temple. Nu intends to use this vital information to reestablish the obliterated Jedi Order. The data file is also mission critical to Vader in carrying out the Emperor’s objective. However, obtaining this information has proven quite the task for the Dark Lord.

Darth Vader #10 concludes this great story arc by Charles Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli. Both have done a stellar job filling the shoes of Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca, retaining Vader’s intensity and displaying his growing talent for guile. My only complaint in this series is Camuncoli’s artistic style of Vader’s helmet; Vader maintains the appearance reminiscent of the concept art of Ralph McQuarrie. Whether this is an homage to McQuarrie, or simply a style choice, I find it distracting. Considering the flawless art throughout the book, I can only conclude this is intentional.

Star Wars-related prose and comics are quickly surpassing the movies in my opinion in quality and style, and Darth Vader is leading the way. If you would have told me six months ago that Darth Vader would battle a librarian, I would not have believed you. Not only has Soule made it interesting, the entire arc was so well done that I’m looking forward to future arcs from this duo, especially after this week’s offering.
