review 1: This book is not a romance in the traditional sense - no heaving bosoms or instant soul mates. Instead, Ms. Hootman brings us the story of two people who have each spent thirty years in emotional bubbles and decide to take a chance on each other. Rather than perfectly supportive friends and family members, everyone comes with their own flaws and insecurities, making for a believable and enjoyable read.
review 2: I really liked this book, in fact, I liked it so much I stayed up reading until 1 am, which is something I never do, in order to finish it. This book is a love story, not something I usually feel drawn to. But I picked it up because it's about a disabled computer nerd teacher, who wants to date the gym teacher. Gym teachers are stereotypically lesb... moreians, and she is certainly described as looking like one, so I was curious how this would work out. Both the characters in this book are really likeable and I ended up caring about both of them. This is a first novel (another thing I usually avoid) but the author did an excellent job describing their psychological make-up, their past, why they were the types of people they were, and describing how & why their relationship develops. I was kind of sad it was over when it was. I also liked that the book takes place in Healdsburg. It always makes it feel more real to me when a book takes place where I live, or near me, anyway. It felt so realistic, even the description of the high school and the students seemed authentic. I have to say I actually learned something about how to have a relationship from these two characters. The author must be wise beyond her years. less
