SASCHA DARLINGTON’S REVIEWWhen I was a little girl, I thought that Olympic ice skating was the most magical thing ever and I probably even dreamed about donning one of those pretty dresses and skating to some incredible music. Forget the fact that I couldn’t skate. For daydreaming that wasn’t necessary.
Jennifer Comeaux’s Gold Rush is like the hot fudge sundae of that daydream. The skating and the Olympics being the ice cream and the sweet romance with Braeden being the whipped cream and cherry.
A lot of writers when dealing with a sports romance put very little emphasis on the sport at all, but Comeaux gives it equal footing to the romance so that you are going through the ice skating challenges with Liza, feeling her disappointments and thrills as she experiences them. And, Comeaux has put a lot of research into this, which is all very satisfying.
The romance is sweet, with Liza experiencing a lot of firsts. And Braeden is pretty much the perfect, sweetest boyfriend imaginable, learning the ropes of what it means to date a world class athlete, and he comes with a fantastic family. I also liked Liza’s family. They seemed to possess just the right amount of protectiveness and support. And Liza’s twin younger siblings are great, especially Quinn who, at 7, already seems years older than her age.
As if Gold Rush didn’t have enough story going for it, there is a subplot regarding Liza’s adoptive parents and their tragedy. This is handled so well and makes Liza’s story even more poignant.
While I have not read Comeaux’s other ice skating novels (not yet, but soon), I understand that Gold Rush is a standalone that has overlapping of characters from previous novels. This is one of the instances where the novel truly is a standalone.
