half of something

It’s the weekend of a friend’s 40th birthday.  10 years ago a lot of us were pairing off and getting married.  That was a fun season, attending weddings of  friends in beautiful places.  All of us were full of hope and promise regarding the future.  Fast forward to today and we are middle aged and parents.  Tonight is a rare chance to go out together without the kids. Similar to the old days when we were in our twenties working, when the weekends were reserved for dining out, dinner parties and hanging out with friends.

It did go by in the blink of an eye.  I will say.  But I don’t want to go back in time, I am okay with allowing the past to slip through my fingers like sand.  I want to remember the good times of the past.  I had a realization recently that at the end of our life — looking back I will want to remember the beautiful touching moments between mother and daughter.  Now that I look back on the pictures of my daughter as a baby, it is a faded memory, a little fuzzier than present reality.  I treasure the memories of those days and nights.

My husband and I recently celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary.  We again had a rare chance to get out without our daughter. This does not happen too often.  We bought tickets to the hilarious comedian Heather McDonald, she has a great podcast that I listen to called Juicy Scoop.  We had just enough time before the show to grab sushi at one of my favorite spots called Hapa.  It was worth the time to pause, celebrate and reflect back on our time together.   We have grown a lot in our relationship and into ourselves.  It’s like we are on a long hike together, we are on the same path, but for the most part we depend on our own two feet to get up the mountain.  Our goals and mission are similar, but we are also strong and independent when necessary.  However, if one of us should stumble or fall; the other is there to pick-up or call for help.

The weekend will culminate with the best day of the week: Sunday.  We are hosting friends for a brunch.  Can you say bubbles and quiche?  A sausage, egg and cheese quiche with pastry dough a la Julia Child will be prepared by u;s and a bottle of bubbly to be brought by our friends, maybe something like this.   And then on Sunday night, the Academy Awards.  I am happy I saw LaLaLand and it is great odds to win best picture.  It was a very uplifting and inspiring.  I love to watch the awards shows starting with the red carpet.  This year it is being hosted by Jimmy Kimmel; with my favorite podcaster attending and writing jokes backstage, Adam Carolla.

I hope you have enjoyed your weekend and I would love to hear from you!

xoxo, Brooke Webb
