review 1: Enjoyed this immensely, and found it very readable. I can't quite understand why some have struggled with the structure: although the time frame does shift back and forth throughout the novel it is relatively easy to follow and the verse makes the politics and intrigues of Elizabethan London (and Europe for that matter) really come. alive. Barber's Marlowe is also a fascinating, charming character, although I do take the theory that Marlowe was actually Shakespeare with a complete pinch of salt.

... morea of Marlowe as Shakespeare was teasingly well developed, ultimately there was something that did not quite light the spark across the tale. But there were moments when it very nearly worked for me and I could willingly suspend disbelief, usually on a particular sensitive or elegant turn of phrase. In the end I wasn't entirely convinced that writing in iambic pentameters had rendered the telling of a novel idea more convincing.
