July 2017 Meeting Recap

Submitted by Anne U., Secretary

Hello Modern Quilters!  There was a lot to catch up on at the July meeting. First of all, Kathy thanked our refreshment providers, Celese and Marge.  Lori LeVar announced that the De-Stash Sale held in May raised $788!  The committee not only sold items at our guild meeting, but at two other locations to maximize sales! Committee members were Sue Kaiser, Kris Zimmerman, Viv Browning and Ann Unes.

Ann G reported that we had thirty five members present, one new member, Judy, one guest, Hope, and six guests from Champaign. She reminded everyone that dues for the next year can be paid in August or September.  Members not paid by October 1st will be removed from the mailing list.

Nearing the one year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shootings, the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild sent a thank you for our response to their request for blocks and quilt tops for victims and first responders.

A Modern Maker/Vendor Fair is planned for September.  Members who machine quilt, bind, make labels or offer other services related to sewing and quilting are encouraged to set up a small display.  They may bring business cards, samples or items to sell, and will have half a table of space.  Non BNMQG members may come and will pay a small fee. Contact Donna Lee to reserve your space.

The Nominating Committee reported that it is still looking for someone to fill the secretary spot for next year.  Please let Marilyn Beal know if you’d be willing to step up and help out.  If you have questions about what the job entails, contact Ann Unes.

Sign ups for the fall retreat are continuing. It will be a fun time to work on our own projects.  Two mini classes will be offered – a machine quilting workshop and a zippered pouch.  So far, sixteen members have paid with another four reserved.  Payment is due at the August meeting – those paid by that date will receive a “swag bag” of fun items at the retreat.  The retreat will be held at Camp Cilca in Cantrall, IL, north of Springfield. Up to three people can share a room, each of which has its own bath. Linens are included. See Donna Lee for prices, but it’s a GREAT DEAL.  We will take turns making meals; see Betty Woodruff to sign up for that. The dates are Friday, October 6th, Saturday, October 7, Sunday, October 8, and check out is Monday morning, October 9.  That’s TWO AND A HALF DAYS OF PURE SEWING JOY!   And probably some laughing and eating, too.

Vickie Alsene is hoping to offer a mini-dyeing session at the church before the August meeting. It would begin at 4 pm and feature ice-dyeing.  This session is only $10 and includes the dye, gloves and a mask.  Participants would bring a 3 to 5 gallon bucket, and fabric to dye.  Let Vickie know if you are interested.  Watch for further information via email.

The BNMQG will be meeting up with the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild on Saturday, September 23rd at NIU in DeKalb, IL to see a quilt display on Quilts and Human Rights.  We will also have a private, behind the scenes tour of the textile collection.  We will caravan and/or carpool. Save the date!

The HeartBeat Quilts for the neonatal intensive care nursery are still being accepted by Cindy Reynolds.  Please bring your finished or unfinished quilt to the August meeting.  It’s ok if it’s unfinished – she just wants to get all the kits/quilts back so they can be labeled and taken to the hospital.

Sewing Days for HeartBeat will be on the third Wednesdays of the month at alternating locations: August 16th at the church, September 20th at Bolines, and October 18th at the church.  We will be working on one more batch of quilts using half-square triangles, then will have new blocks next year.

Kathy announced that the guild had received a sample box of Tula Pink fabric from fabric subscription company, Cita.  These beautiful fabrics will be used for prizes for the guild.  Cards are available if members want more info on their offerings.

The July member survey asked the question: “what would you prefer to make for a member swap project?  One member preferred a pincushion swap, three preferred to swap a couple pot holders, and the overwhelming majority (25) would love to swap zippered pouches!!  Those members who participate in the survey are entered into the door prize drawing.  This month’s winner was Danna Boore!

Brenda Deal won a luscious group of fabrics in this month’s Fabric Raffle.

Block Lotto had great participation this month with the arrow blocks.  There were four winners: Donna Lee, Sue Kaiser, Connie Borth and Barb Haab.

Next month’s Block Lotto block is a Modern Squash Blossom block.  A fabric strip was given, to be used with coordinating fabrics on a light gray background.  The sample Ann G made was so cute and cheerful!  For directions, click HERE.

The program for the July meeting was a reveal and design night for this year’s mystery quilt.  Designer Sue Kaiser showed her completed quilt and another top, to give ideas of ways to arrange the delightful arrow blocks. Those who had made the blocks laid out their quilts with lots of input from other members!  It was fun to see the many fabric combinations and layout ideas.  Hopefully we will see some completed tops at next month’s Show and Tell!!

Lots of wonderful items for show and tell

Our next meeting will be August 22, at our usual location.  We will be covering our lanyards with modern fabric, and voting on the slate of officers.  Be sure to put it on your calendar!
