La Vie En Rose

What is it about Parisian street style? Why are we so drawn to it? Why do many of us try to emulate the appearance of a Parisian “It” girl? I think I may have an answer.

While using the brilliantly chic Inès de la Fressange as my guide, I’ve discovered what it is about Parisian street style that has us in awe.

It’s the je ne sais quoi.

There is a level of polished effortlessness that happens when dressing like a Parisian. It’s about the classic pieces, the clean lines, topped with the amount of self-confidence that would make anyone feel unstoppable. The Parisian “It” girl isn’t dripping labels, and can make a sweatshirt from Target look like it’s made to be worn with a pair of Gucci loafers. She is a fashion icon, not a trend follower. As someone who is still developing her sense of personal style, I look to others whose style radiates self-assurance. I’ve always found it difficult to consistently incorporate trends into my wardrobe just for the sake of the trend, not because it actually depicts who I am and what I love.

I mentioned that I’ve been looking to Inès de la Fressange for inspiration in the evolution of my personal style. In case you’ve never heard of her, please do yourself a favor and read everything you can about her. The model/fashion designer/socialite/muse has written numerous books on how to embrace the fashion sense of a Parisian, making you feel like you’ve discovered the secret to timeless style.

This book is filled with dos and don’ts along with “recipes” to help you build the perfect ensemble.

This book also gives style advice, while naming local Parisian shops for any budding style icon to visit.

She recently collaborated with the global retailer Uniqlo and it took everything I had not to purchase every item (evidently I’m really into designer collaborations lately). Each piece was stylish, effortless, and easily made its way into my existing wardrobe. Très bien.

The next time you look in your closet and are filled with ennui, ask yourself if your style really is defining who you are. Are you staying true to who you are and what you really love to wear? Or are you wearing it just for the sake of the trend? And if all else fails, ask yourself “What would Inès say?”
