Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying is a spiritual sequel (adaptations of novels by Darryl Ponicsan) to Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail, starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne. The film will have its premiere at the New York Film Festival where it will open both on Amazon Video and theaters this November. We have the first trailer below
In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie, as funny as it is heartbreaking, three aging Vietnam-era Navy vets—soft-spoken Doc (Steve Carell), unhinged and unfiltered Sal (Bryan Cranston), and quietly measured Mueller (Laurence Fishburne)—reunite to perform a sacred task: the proper burial of Doc’s only child, who has been killed in the early days of the Iraqi Invasion. As this trio of old friends makes its way up the Eastern seaboard, Linklater gives us a rich rendering of friendship, a grand mosaic of common life in the USA during the Bush era, and a striking meditation on the passage of time and the nature of truth. To put it simply, Last Flag Flying is a great movie from one of America’s finest filmmakers.

Acting as a spiritual sequel for one of the best film’s of the seventies would be worth a viewing alone, but the fact that it is directed by Richard Linklater, whose down home, carefully observed tales of humanity have consistently made him one of the most revered American filmmakers of the last couple decades should put this on everyone’s must-see list. Toss in the amazing cast of Bryan Cranston (Cranston plays the role originated by Jack Nicholson in Hal Ashby’s 1973 movie), Steve Carell (who has proven himself beyond just a straight-comedian) and Laurence Fishburne and you have something of a treat for movie fans.
The film might even spark a renewed interest in Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail. A movie that might contain one of Jack Nicholson’s best performances (that’s saying a lot, especially before he became a sort of caricature of himself later in his career). The film’s lyrical, yet gritty feel is a perfect vehicle for Linklater who excels at philosophical musings of the common man.
After playing the NYFF on September 28, Last Flag Flying will be released in theaters by Amazon on November 3rd.
