review 1: At 100 pages in, I still didn't know who the main character(s) were, or what the plot was. This is pretty unusual. I thought for sure this must be part of a series, and that was way there wasn't a plot yet. But no. The main characters were not the drivers of the plot, they were just caught up in it. The story to me felt shallow, because there was not why. I guess the story was about what do you do when you don't know which side is right. oh, and the ending wasn't satisfying. The story didn't work for me.
review 2: (3.5 stars) When a family of sisters is left orphaned by their father's death, they find themselves in a precarious financial situation. Each of the sister's has an obvious particular talent, except for Nemienne. The practical, business mind... moreed sister realizes that they must sell at least 2 of their number in order to keep the family's business running. The two sisters are Nemienne and her beautiful sister, Karah. Karah is sold to a flower house, a situation similar to the Japanese geishas. She is to be groomed to be a flower wife, or second wife to a wealthy and powerful man. Nemienne is apprenticed to a wizard due to her unusual way of seeing the world. As each young woman learns her new role in life, they are drawn into a conspiracy against the kingdom. The kingdom's truce with a neighboring land is about to expire, and there are those who would like to see a change in regime. Also drawn into the conspiracy is a mage from the neighboring kingdom. Is he out for revenge or are his purposes for visiting the kingdom less sinister? The crown prince is the key to the drama and as the sisters are pulled into to the action, Nemienne's skills and her perceptions will be key to their survival. This was an interesting story with some fantastic world building and I look forward to reading more from this author. less
