review 1: tbh, I only picked this book up because Kevin is asexual. I'm glad I did. A. because Kevin's actually asexual (which yes, is conflated with aromantic by at least Ellie, but I won't be super picky on this) and B. this basically ended up being Percy Jackson but with Maori myth and more swearing. All of which I'm okay with. More than okay, actually. Yeah, the beginning was a little slow, and then suddenly its like ACTION AND INFODUMPING EVERYWHERE, but its entertaining. I enjoyed it, and it's a book I would definitely keep in my (hypothetical high school) classroom, if only for the few queer and PoC characters. One of the main points I picked up from this is how important representation is. There is an asexual character who is a person and not his sexuality, but that is still... more explicitly stated and part of his character building (looking at you, Albus Dumble-not-really-representation) and its SO NICE I'm so happy.Good book, would read again.
review 2: 2.5 stars. I think the book is ok. Didn't blow my mind or anything, but it was good in general. Some things I especially loved would include the absence of *cheese* and the ever-annoying insta-louw! I also very much enjoyed the folktales and the fact that no mystery was stretched over the limit. But I really had trouble deciphering whatever half of stuff meant which made it a little confusing. I had a bit higher expectations, though I'm grateful it didn't turn out to be another twilight which it very much looked like in the beginning. I don't know but maybe it's because of the writing or some problem with me, i just feel dissatisfied, otherwise i repeat, it's a decent enough book. less
