These three trilogies are books that I pick up most often as I love the stories so much. Every time I’ve lost interest in reading books, I open one of these ones and they completely hook me back to loving reading again.
Laini Taylor: The Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Out of all of these trilogies this was the first that I read, if I remember correctly, and I fell in love with it instantly. The story is about a girl named Karou, who lives in between two completely different worlds, the human world and the Chimaera world. Throughout the first books she has to deal with the feeling that something is missing from her life, and she might get answers from this extremely handsome Seraph Akiva, who also happens to be on the side of the enemies of the Chimaera. In the background there is this ongoing war between the Seraphim and Chimaera and Karou somehow ends up having a very crucial role in the midst of it, with her friends Zuzana and Mik from the human world, and they have to learn how to work together with the Chimaera and vice versa.
I especially love the fantasy world that Taylor has created in the books, because I haven’t read anything similar like that before. The setting moves from Prague to Marrakesh to the home of Chimaera and Seraphim, and they all are beautifully described and the words really make you feel like you are there within the story. The writing is flows nicely through the chapters and really hooks the reader to the story.
In its heart, this trilogy is a gorgeous and complicated love story, which plays with this traditional concept of the forbidden love. The story is also about friendship, war, the lust for power and the meaning of family. I think the concept of this fantasy world and the characters make this story so unique and extremely enjoyable to read, and that’s why I love this trilogy so very much.
Sally Green: Half Bad
I usually recommend this trilogy to especially younger teenagers as it is such a great read in that age. The protagonist of the story is a boy called Nathan Byrn who is a “half-blooded” witch, meaning he’s half white witch and half black witch. In the world of this book the white witches are considered the superior to the black ones who are generally thought to be evil, and above all that the father of Nathan is the most dangerous black witch that there is, Marcus.
Due to his father and the fact that he is half black witch, he is considered as bad by the White Witches’ Council. The first book follows Nathan trying to escape from a place where he has been imprisoned by the council, and his search for a powerful witch, Mercury and his father. The story develops into Nathan joining the Alliance of Free Witches that want freedom from the White Witches’ Council’s rule. The tension between these two groups grows eventually into a battle.
Also in this trilogy, there is a love story in the midst of all the events and I really love the fact that different sexual orientations are represented in this book. The love story develops slowly but beautifully and the ending of it had me completely bawling. Again in this trilogy the writing just compels the reader to keep reading and every ending makes you want to read more instantly. Overall this story is about one’s identity, family, love and justice, which makes it such a rich and amazing read.
Kerstin Gier: Ruby Red
This trilogy is my ultimate comfort reading one. I’m in love with the world and the characters and they make me to come back to this story frequently. The story involves time travel to the past, which makes this book so gorgeous to me. I like how the time traveling part has been developed because it’s quite unusual and very interesting. The protagonist of the book is a girl named Gwyneth Shepherd, who wasn’t originally supposed to have the time travel gene, but due to quite complicated family situation she is indeed the righteous person to have it.
The time travellers come from two families specifically and they have a secret society with a mission, that requires Gwyneth and a great-looking boy from the other family called Gideon, to travel back in time to obtain the blood of other time travellers from the family. As one might guess, there is a bit of a romance developing between Gwyneth and Gideon, that is messy but marvellous, and I really enjoyed the dynamics of their relationship.
At some point these two time travellers realise the real reason behind the society’s mission and start to work against it and try to figure out who is pulling the strings in the society. I enjoy how the story unwinds really slowly and the villain’s identity is concealed up until the last book, even though when rereading the books you can notice small hints of who the person is, but on the first read it’s pretty well kept as a surprise. Overall this story is about romance, secrets, family, greed and mortality. This is a trilogy I’ll probably never stop coming back to and the same goes with the two trilogies above.
