Nightports and Matthew Borne explore a variety of sounds and textures by just using a variety of pianos (audio)
I’m always a fan of when musicians and producers take an interesting concept and just run with it. For example: this new track from Newports (with Matthew Borne) has the two exploring what interesting sounds and textures can be made from tooling around with a piano. But rather than making something abstract and experimental (with no disrespect to John Cage), they decide to go for something more tangible and surprisingly engaging. Set to a beautiful but haunting piano melody, the track picks up momentum and becomes an intricate interplay of plucked arpeggios and found sound percussion (and some seemingly electronic textures for good measure) until the song sort of drifts off at the end. It really has the feel of a great moody soundtrack piece full of some wonderful musical tension. Definitely curious to hear more from this project.
