review 1: Shors does if again. I have read all of his books and I really believe he is connected to South East Asia in ways that convey the true essence of a place. I read this book without wanting to put it down, there is a passion he invokes, a light that shines from his characters, even the evil and hateful ones, they stay with you for a while. I finished the book last night and this morning, I find myself still thinking of Ajadevi and Prince Jayawar, their dreams for Angkor and that beautiful temple which Shors has described in great detail. It feels like the center of Hindu culture, yet there are so many instances when Shors has added wise words of the Buddha to balance the two belief systems in Cambodia at the time. That he can take these historical figures from the books and ... moregive them a face, a name and a story is a testament to his talent as a writer.
review 2: I enjoyed this book - i loved learning about SE Asia and Angkor Wat. The characters are well-written and interesting. There were several characters i loved reading about! I did feel the story took a while to "take off." The very beginning was exciting - when the two communities were at war. Then, the story slowed a bit while the cultures planned their next steps...I loved the ending! It was so exciting, colorful and dramatic. I wish there was more of that in the middle of the book. All in all, an interesting and fascinating read. less
