New Tween Book Review: TBH, This is so Awkward by Lisa Greenwald

What’s going on everyone, it’s Sarah!

Tween take over time, again this week. Okay, so this book made me feel so old…especially because I had trouble with some of the texting lingo….I don’t know whether  to facepalm or SMH.

Summary: Cecily, Gabby and Prianka are middle school besties, who are navigating the waters at school. They are part of choir, are helping put on a dance, and trying to convince Gabby’s mom from moving the family away. This year, new girl, Victoria, is desperate to make friends with them, Gabby has a crush on a boy, and one of Prianka’s non-school friends transfers to school and totally wants to find his place on her social calendar. The girls have reputations to uphold, so sometimes their reactions enter into the territory of bullying. Can these girls figure it out, not be jerks and save the dance? This story is told entirely through text message/email/short text.

Review:

Not gonna lie, with all of the reading I have been doing recently, I was stoked when I found out that this book was all short text. However, after reading it, I realize that I could have done with a bit more text. I felt that the plot was lacking, it simply couldn’t be developed because there wasn’t any real way to do that. Also, it was hard to connect to or care about the characters, because you only got to see them through text. I think the morale of the story got out of hand and became unrealistic. While I had problems with this novel, I know that the tweens are going to love it. This book offers them a very quick read, with all of the popularity/socially relevant issues that they gravitate towards.
