review 1: This is an innovative book told from two viewpoints. Two very different pen pals become friends over the course of their correspondence. River is a young boy from rural Kentucky and Meena is an Indian immigrant living in the Chinatown area of NYC. They both confide in each other. River's grandmother is trying to help fight against mountaintop removal mining in their community. Meena's family live illegally in a rent controlled apartment, the landlord is trying to drive out all the old tenants to make money on the property. Same Sun Here would be a great book to read for class discussion. It offers several important topics for discussion, including the environment, social issues, and mulit-culturalism.
review 2: An adolescent book with a person of color.
... more Yay! A South Asian student said this is the best book ever and I think it's because it's the first time she read herself. Simplistic story. Two teens from different backgrounds are penpals. Meena, an Indian immigrant living in NYC writes to River, a white boy in the south. Though their backgrounds are drastically different, they have lots of similarities. I like how issues of illegal immigration, gentrification, environmental hazards come into play here. Really sweet characters who write novels as letters, not realistic to me. The book ends before real awkwardness could occur which is a little frustrating, but overall worthwhile read about learning the other. less
