Of plates and sporks – Sea to summit style: first impressions

Boxing Day sales are dangerous – but if it’s gear you need, it’s fine, right? Before we set off overnight, we needed a family set of plates and cutlery. Experience tells me that plates need a lip with the kids, and while I liked the idea of collapsible plates, I had images of a plate of food collapsing into the ground and my nice clean plate being given to a child.

So, I was looking at the Sea to summit plates, and with 40% off care of Mountain Designs online store with free delivery, a set of delta plates and sporks were en route.

The parcel arrived today and at a glance it looks just what we need. The lip is substantial, hopefully enough to hold sliding food! This will serve for plate and bowl. I chose blue, because, well – blue that was all that was left.

The hanging loop is also form fitting to a thumb, for one handed eating and control. This is a surprising positive design feature, especially if I can get the kids to use it!

The base is a honeycomb matrix, which apparently means no burnt legs – again good for kids (and wife!).

The matching spork (I chose dontgetlostinthebushorange) is also well designed. For the one pot type cooking I am planning, the pointy scoopy end looks like it will scoop well and poke sometimes.

The cutting end has serrations – but this ain’t no steak knife! My daughter thinks they look flimsy (Her “Dad I could just snap this.” Me “Don’t you freakin dare!”) but I think they look about right.

Per person, it’s not a bad weight – 134g all up for plate and cutlery.

Finally they all nest together really well.

So I’m impressed. Can’t wait to test these babies out – and I have highlighted an overnight route on a newly purchased Mudda Biddy map that might just be the ticket.
