review 1: I picked up this book partly because I think the premise of running from the 'high life' to anonymity is interesting, but mainly because I've enjoyed Ali's other novels. Overall I found the story disappointing, un imaginative and nothing more than chick lit. Not that there's anything wrong with chick lit but I expected more from Ali. The third party narratives used by Ali are sycophantic and explain the mechanics of her escape but add little else. Ali writing as Diana comes across to me as a spoilt and dislikeable, and frankly the whole escape story seems to have been impossibly easy for the most famous woman in the world. I would only recommend this if you're interested in the royal establishment or want an easy forgettable read, but otherwise this seems to me to be anoth... moreer cash in on Diana.
review 2: page turning, clever "what if" fiction revolving on the premise that Diana never died, rather, she orchestrated her disappearance.I call it clever because of bits where Diana/Lydia confronts the paparazzi Grabowski who discovered her. I like the intimacy of his awareness of her physicality, like she is an animal, like she is prey to him. I like how their conversation collapsed when he said frankly, that he wasn't looking for her, that he had discovered her by accident. I like the insane frailty of her wanting the paparazzi to look for her.I think that people that grew up with Diana in the paper are always looking for her, at least I am. less
