Old Sam Peabody

Being able to identify birds by call and/or song is quite challenging and I am often asked, “How on earth do you know so many?” Repetition, repetition, repetition. The only way you will learn a wide range of bird calls and songs is by getting out in the field and learning them first hand. Learning anything, for most people, involves practice and experience. Some birds are difficult; the empidonax flycatchers for example. But, some birds are very easy, like this White-throated Sparrow. Their song, “Old Sam Peabody,” is instantly recognizable. And yes, they do sing while wintering here in Florida. Listen for them first thing in the morning or late in the evening, especially when the weather is fine.
