review 1: I love story collections and take my time with them, never reading straight through, savoring each one in between chapters of other books on my night stand. Not so with Booker Award winner Hilary Mantel's The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. I gobbled these quirky, dark, brilliant stories like a box of chocolate truffles, compulsively and with full knowledge they'd be gone and I would still be waiting for the successor to Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies. I am stunned by this author's versatility and talent, but then who wins the Booker two years in a row?
review 2: So, I don't like short stories but even I have to admits these are particularly fine. Elegant, polished prose; closely observed characters and situations; plot twists and surprises; humor some
... moretimes but mostly creepy and disturbing. Witty. I haven't listened to anything else Jane Carr has read, I think, but she does a fine job with a range of voices and accents to represent the diversity of the characters. What she does best is capture the tone of the stories and fits her cadence to characters' speech. I hadn't thought about Anita Brookner as a read-aloe, but one of Mantel's characters asks, What would Anita Brookner do? And, you know, her books would be fine companions. less

An interesting collection of short stories that had a wide range of settings and concepts.
