Penelope Douglas’s ‘Hideaway’ Review

Devil’s Night is drawing near in Thunder Bay and all Hell is breaking loose. The Horsemen must work together, and team up with an enemy, to stay safe and maybe get even. Not all is as it seems though, and some secrets can’t stay buried for long.

“Run. Because I turn into a very different person when no one’s looking.”

Kai Mori and the other two remaining Horsemen are just trying to get on with their lives after the incident the previous year. They continue to live at Delcour, run their joint company, and hold extravagant parties. However, they all can’t help looking over their shoulders for Damon, the last Horseman and the one who could destroy all they’ve worked for. Michael worries constantly for Rika’s safety, Will just wants to get even with his ex-best friend, but Kai has more to worry about then what Damon will do when he reappears, he’s more worried about what Damon will say.

Banks is just biding her time until Damon returns home. She’s worked her way up through Gabriel Torrance’s ranks and is now running bigger errands and is one of his most trusted men, the only problem being she isn’t actually a man. When Damon’s threats against the Horsemen become scarier and more frequent, Kai decides it’s time to make a move. Kai strikes a deal with Gabriel Torrance, landing Banks as his new ‘assistant’ in the bargain. As things start to heat up between the two, Damon’s anger heats up as well. One thing is clear, though, this Devil’s Night is going to be even crazier than the last.

“The only ones who can hurt you are the ones you love.”

Ever since I read Corrupt back in 2015 I have been stalking book sites just waiting for this book to release. When I saw Penelope’s Instagram post that it was live (and on sale) I got right on Amazon and one-clicked it I was so excited. (Hint: this book and the first book are still on sale on Amazon if you don’t have them yet!)

This is my first New Adult book in a while as I started to veer more towards YA fantasy, but this book brought me right back. This reminded me why I loved New Adult romance so much. That giddy, toe curling, butterflies in your stomach type feeling that only a good sexy scene can give you. This book was everything I was hoping it would be and everything I needed. Unfortunately, my book hangover is now hitting me HARD.

One of the reasons I love this series so much is the darker element, I was constantly on the edge of my seat and I had this feeling like I was stuck in a horror movie the entire time (in a really good way). My heart was pounding and I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. I never knew what was going to happen or when, and I was constantly waiting for all Hell to break loose. There were so many twists and turns and all these moments were I said “Oh, shit” out loud. It was honestly the best feeling, I haven’t been that ‘in’ to a book in a long time.

I really enjoyed both characters in this book as well. Banks was such a strong female lead, and I loved that she didn’t just fall right into Kai’s arms. One of my biggest pet peevs is when a ‘strong’ female character just falls for the bad guy right away, it seems unrealistic and kind of takes away the character’s strength. In this case, Banks and Kai were ‘together’ but each were still sticking to their guns about whose side they were on. It was more realistic in terms of what the story was going for, and I loved that aspect of it. Kai was just the all around perfect bad boy book boyfriend and I’m 100% totally in love with him at this moment.

This was one of those books where I didn’t want it to end. I couldn’t put it down and when I was out shopping or cleaning or at work I just couldn’t wait to get home and give this book my full attention. This series is one of my absolute favorites, and I really cannot wait for Kill Switch to go live next year. Here’s to another book hangover, and another year stalking Penelope’s social media!
