review 1: As usual, I wish we had half stars. I thought this was definitely a 3 1/2. I felt the author was trying to tell two stories – the politics between Israel and Palestine, and the relationship story. I thought she was right on with the relationship stuff. I know Jews who have Daniel's attitude about Israel, but I felt this aspect of the book needed more clarification. It also seemed to be a bit long. And I usually like long books.
review 2: I suspect some people may read this and think it's about being gay. Of course that is an essential part of the story, but ultimately this is a novel about being part of a couple, learning to parent, and learning to live with inconceivable loss. I thought this was a beautiful book, perhaps worthy of the Pultizer. It felt hones
... moret, authentic, and relevant. I praise the author for also broaching important political topics such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Gay Rights in a way that added depth to the storyline without being the storyline. It's always a joy to find a book that generates both a strong emotional and intellectual response. Well Done Judith Frank! less
