hey y’all!
so remember how in early october i did a 10K out on Granville Island? well i absolutely loved it and knew that i wanted to do more races. so at the beginning of november when i got an email notifying me that it was my “last chance” to register for the RUNVAN Fall Classic, i jumped at the chance to run again! from what i gathered when i did the turkey trot, RUNVAN puts on good races so i knew it would be a good crowd and a good course.
Race Name – RUNVAN Fall Classic Half Marathon, 10K and 5K
When – Remembrance Day Weekend (Sunday, November 12 this year)
Where – University of British Columbia Campus
Distance – there’s a half marathon (13.1 miles), a 10 kilometer race (which i did) and a 5 kilometer race
so this race offers three different distances. the main event is a half marathon, but there’s also a 10K and a 5K that are offered. the start line is outside of the student union building at the University of British Columbia which is a big university here in Vancouver. for the 10K course its basically an out and back, you 5K from the student union building to the turn around point on one of the main roads, and then you take a slightly different route back.
now let’s take a moment to laugh at me, i live in vancouver which is known for its rain since technically we’re in a rainforest. but my brain didn’t even consider that it may rain on race day, probably because it was sunny outside the day i registered. it literally rains here like 7 months a year, and race day was no exception. it was pretty dang chilly and it absolutely poured rain. but thankfully i dressed for cool weather, and we were all given gloves in the race packet which were a lifesaver! the rain didn’t stop anybody though, all the volunteers were going strong which was nice to see when jogging through the hard, pounding rain.
should probably embrace this mentality for the next six months.this race was also a 10K PR for me! based on my GPS i crossed the finish line in 57:33 which was about 17 seconds faster than my previous PR. it isn’t much, but my average pace was 5:45 per kilometer versus my prior PR where it was 5:47. its the little things i suppose.
