The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl
review 1: This book starts off where the "Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Gothgirl" leave off. Although I think it might be able to work as a stand-alone even if you haven't read the first one. Basically, this sequel follows the first but instead is narrated through the eyes of "Kyra" aka "Goth Girl." I really liked Kyra's character in the first book so I was excited to read this sequel. She's a strong character. She's dealt with life, death, love, teenage angst and plenty of confusion. As a reader you find out things about her that are true, false and pretty intimate. But much like my response to it's it's predecessor I'm left feeling, meh with the book as a whole. I'm willing to keep reading Lyga's works though and maybe something will ring with me eventu... moreally.
review 2: I am a huge fan of most of Lyga's work, and that may be why I gave it 3 stars, when I really didn't enjoy it. Lyga has a tendency to make his female characters into caricatures. It feels like reading a teenage boy's impression of how girls are even though he's never dated. I especially disliked the whole bisexual curiosity bit, because that's what it felt like, a bit. Something used for its shocker value, or so the author can say "look how hip and cool I am!" especially since I feel like if the main character was a guy, he wouldn't have used the "straight guy experimenting" for his character arc. Also, honestly, Goth Girl felt more "real" when we were reading about her from Fanboy's perspective, in the first book, then now. First-person made her seem really flat and two-dimensional. less
