We have two girls. And they terrify me. Both have an incredible sense of self for their ages which are 7 and 21 months. Both are stubborn and strong willed like their mama, both have their dads bum (which is awesome coz I don’t have one!) both are stunningly beautiful and they also have their own interests.
Our 7 year old has been obsessed with Pink since she was 2 and she was here touring. Watching the interviews on TV and seeing the Aerial Acrobatics blew her mind. She’s asked for soooo long to be able to do gymnastics because that’s what she wanted to learn. But what we found was that that wasn’t what was taught in your normal gymnastics classes. We weren’t aware that Aerials were a “thing” and there were proper circus aerial classes available. So almost 3 months ago we finally clicked and found her a class. And she has THRIVED!
Under the awesome tutelage and support of her teachers Nicky & Stacey @ Studio 27 pole fitness she’s just fallen in love with the whole aerial acrobatics thing. She’s been moved up into an intermediate/advanced class after just 4 weeks and is pushing herself to do more and more. She does one class a week as she’s also committed to a basketball team which trains weekly too so she uses all her spare time lately to watch Aerials videos and if we have a park nearby with monkey bars and a fireman’s pole she’s all over it.
But it’s a challenge for all of us. She is so determined that she should be doing more and should be better than she is and it’s hard bringing her back down a level and showing her that she’s got a long way to go so to take it slow and she will get there.
Recently we took her to see Cirque Du Soleil: Toruk First Flight and she was so captivated. We have the show DVD now and it’s been watched probably 10 times since we went to the show. She wants the soundtrack played in the car, a specific song though, the Silks part. She’s obsessed. This week she managed a foot lock Silks climb easy as pie whereas last week she struggled. She’s so hard on herself and so strong about it. She’s been inspired like crazy because lately she’s even had likes and comments on her Aerials videos on our Instagram account from some of the Acrobats in the Toruk First Flight tour. This morning she was screaming with excitement in the kitchen because the official Cirque Du Soleil instagram account commented saying good work and that they liked her video!
Raising girls is tough. They have their own mindset, their own drive, their own determination and keeping their attitudes in check, their expectations of themselves and of others managed and remembering to remind THEM that they are still a child and not to take everything so seriously just yet is hard. The only thing we can really do is support and guide them and let them lead their own lives with a safety net until their old enough that they no longer need that.
The world needs strong women. But now we just have to survive raising them! And I think we’re doing a pretty good job so far to be honest!!!
