Read N Review: The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod

If you are planning to make “wake up early” a New Year’s resolution in the coming year, then this book is definitely one you should have on your radar. I found out about The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life by Hal Elrod from blogger/influencer, Marianna Hewitt.  I read it this past summer, so a book review on it is waaay overdue.

The Miracle Morning is not just a book, it’s a movement, practiced by thousands of people around the world. Once read, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the highest rated books on Amazon with 1200+ five-star reviews. Hal Elrod wrote this book to help transform every area of a person’s life by simply changing how they start their day every morning, all it takes is a minimum of 6 minutes to make a difference and below you’ll see why…

Author, international Keynote Speaker, and success coach, Hal Elrod, has a life story that is worth writing a book about in and of itself. On December 3rd, 1999, at the age of 20, Hal was hit head on by a drunk driver and woke up from a coma 6 days later, only to find he had 11 broken bones, permanent brain damage, and according to his doctors, a slim chance of ever being able to walk again.

Not only was Hal able to find the strength to prove them wrong in being able to walk but he also went on to complete the challenge of running a 52-mile ultra-marathon, became a hall of fame business achiever, Keynote Speaker, and multiple #1 bestselling author. Permanent brain damage? What brain damage?

People from all over the world have left testimonials on how Hal’s book, The Miracle Morning, has completely transformed their lives in all aspects: health, happiness, relationships, finances, and spirituality. This book is about helping to create your “Level 10” life, simply meant to kick-start a proactive lifestyle, one in which you never settle for less. Hals say, “Most people resign themselves to a life of mediocrity, passively accepting whatever life gives them.” Does this sound like you? Probably so, as almost everyone has been guilty of settling on something at some part in their life. I’m certainly guilty of this as well.

I love this quote by Matthew Kelly, which is emphasized in the book, “On the one hand, we all want to be happy. On the other hand, we all know the things that make us happy. But we don’t do those things. Why? Simple. We are too busy. Too busy doing what? Too busy trying to be happy.”

When creating your perfect Miracle Morning routine you should consider the following types of practices: physical, mental/emotional, relational, and financial.  Along with this you should also consider a few other things in life, such as your circle of influence. The book quotes, “Research has shown that we virtually become like the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with.” So instead of surrounding ourselves constantly with lazy, weak-minded people, why not spend time with positive, successful achievers? “Always seek people who will add value to your life and bring out the best in you.”

According to Hal, these are the 5 steps to a snooze free morning to get your miracle morning started as soon as possible:

  • Say positive affirmations before bed the night before.
  • Put your alarm clock across the room.
  • Brush your teeth as soon as you wake up.
  • Have a glass of cold water.
  • Change clothes and workout.
  • Further details on these 5 steps are provided in the book, but I will let you discover these on your own.

The Miracle Morning consists of six powerful practices, also known as the Life S.A.V.E.R.S. This consist of:

S – silence-strengthens spirituality. This could be meditation, prayer, reflection, deep breathing, and/or gratitude.
    A – affirmations.
V – visualization. If imagining things in your mind is difficult, try creating a vision board.
    E – exercise.
    R – reading.
S – scribing, writing, or journaling.

Although these are the 6 different practices Hal recommends basing your miracle morning off of, it doesn’t necessarily have to be in this specific order and it doesn’t have to include all of the different Life Savers either.

For example, while and after I was reading this book my “miracle morning” went a little something like this:

  • I woke up and read-usually about 20 minutes or 10 pages of my current book. So I started with R.
  • Then I moved into S for scribing and wrote in my journal about my previous day or about the day of.
  • After I had a small breakfast during reading and scribing, I’d move onto E for exercise and workout for about 30 minutes.
  • After exercise, I liked to bring my heart rate back down by practicing S for silence and sitting still for 10-15 minutes by meditating, praying, and Visualizing at the same time.
  • I then moved onto Affirmations as the last part of my morning.
  • Now doing the same thing over and over can certainly become stale so every couple of weeks, I like to switch up what my morning routine consists of. I most recently wrote this blog post on ‘5 Wellness Tips on the Perfect Morning Routine‘ inspired by this book. My morning routine is a bit different now but only slightly.

So you see creating a miracle morning for yourself is all about adopting new habits and sticking to them- something that isn’t always easy, but it’s possible. I still struggle with waking up as early as I want to, but I must admit, the difference of waking up earlier rather than later really does make a huge difference in my level of productivity for the day.

I’m curious- are you an early riser or the latter? Have you heard of this book or have you read it? What did you think? Will you be giving the miracle morning a try?
