review 1: This book was certainly well written, and if the graphic violence and sex doesn't bother you then I do reccomend it. However personally it felt like it didn't need the near 500 pages it has. Simply my opinion, but the story didn't follow the basic plot most stories do, this may be a good, new thing though. I must say though that the blurb of this book doesn't give away anything on what the story will actually be like! It wasn't what I was expecting but I enjoyed it none the less.
review 2: Fun and weird and fucked up. What I like about Jesse Bullington's books is that they stand at strong contrast to all the grimdark fantasies out there that claim to be rooted in historical accuracy (women get raped a lot because history!!) by actually being based in history.
... more They have multi-page bibliographies at the back. They present a world which is indeed grim and dark, but it's genuinely like that for everyone - and women (and other minorities - the two main male characters are gay) have a chance of successfully shoving their way through the shit-pile just the same as men (because, in real history, women found ways too). There's a pleasant lack of sexualised/gendered violence in The Folly of the World. It's not without moments of unpleasantness in other ways, but I liked it a lot: some cool characters (especially Jo, the girl), hilarious similes, and a nice dose of weirdness always lurking on the edge of the story, sometimes intruding. Eels, man. less

I quit after 150 pages. Disturbing at first, uninteresting later.
