review 1: ** SOME SPOILERS, NOTHING TOO BAD **These are such quick reads they're turning into a book-a-night job. Albeit a loooong night! As we enter this story we find Stark, aka Sandman Slim "Monter who kills Monsters" working both sides, the Vigil (an Angel-lead part of Homeland Security) and Lucifer himself (as a bodyguard).Unfortunately there's a Zombie outbreak, and through a series of events Stark finds himself bitten and infected (along with a friend) which in effect kills of his "human" side and awakens his Angel side. You see, Stark is a Nephilim, offspring of Man and Angel, which gives him his strange powers.Armed as usual with his Hellion-borne knife, key to the 13 rooms, and his ka'al he hunts the Zombie plague with the help of a Romany friend, saves Lucifer many times,... more and discovers an internal war among the old magical families of the world, mostly in LA - basically hell on earth.Kadrey writes with a sly, darkly humorous, violent, yet mysterious style. It's the kind of book you find hard to put down, wanting to see what comes next. I wouldn't genre-file it as horror, urban fantasy, hard boiled fiction, or whatever but you see where I'm coming from. There's a fair amount of religion in here - believe me, not in an indoctrinating way! - and even though the series so far has become "Sandman Slim" I think that's because it's just a catchy name. Mostly he likes to be called Stark, or James. Yeah, he is a monster to other monsters, but he has morals too.I'm enjoying the series and undoubtedly I'll eventually catch up and be itching for the next one. But I've got a few to go, and I'm going to make the most of them. Kadrey is a good author, one of the modern brat pack of sorts who doesn't seem to have many inhibitions and whose main character is more than capable of mucking the world up (yeah - censored). Other characters from the first back are back too, but take a back seat, and it seems the overall arc concerning Mason (the original guy who sent him to hell, but is now there himself and taking over) is ticking along nicely.Basically - loving it!5/5
review 2: I really enjoyed the first installment- Sandman Slim, but the sequel was not as good. The characters felt contrived (a zombie killing porn star from France) and the plot was rambling and frankly, Stark doesn’t make all the best decisions. This was such a disappointment. I had such high hopes after the first book, that I would have several books to read (since there are already 4-5 published in the series). less
