review 1: Readers of all ages will appreciate this picture book telling the heartbreaking story of the childhood of Charles Dickens. Though the story is certainly sad, the illustrations but John Hendrix help to maintain the playful vitality of the young Dickens. In order to fully appreciate the characters in themes in Dickens' classic tales, readers must first understand the brutality of his childhood and the world in which lived as a young person. This book tells that story and happily concludes with the revelation that the boy called Dickens grew up to be a "well-known and beloved figure". The message at the end is especially powerful, as it reminds readers that the story of Dickens helps us remember "how much we all might lose when a child's dreams don't come t... morerue."
review 2: A Boy Called Dickens is a fantastic biographic picture book for 3rd graders. This story tells the tale of Charles Dickens' childhood of poverty, labor, and struggle. Young Charles simply wants to go to school; to read; to write. However, he must struggle through a difficult childhood because of a very troubling family situation. How did Charles become this great author?I enjoyed this book because it told a great story. The great aspect of it is that the story itself is about a boy who LOVES to read and to write. It is a story about storytelling. It is a fantastic model for our young children to emulate. The artistry within the book itself was wonderful. The hectic and miserable way of life that working class people suffered through in old London is evident and offers an opportunity to discuss the struggle of low income families. This is a great book to get kids to appreciate and learn to love reading and writing! less

This is supposed to be factual, a little depressing but I guess that was his life. It was ok.
