In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one… except the “thing” inside her.

When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch.

Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she’s special, says she’s one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets, against the wishes of his band of misfits. And Finley thinks she might finally be a part of something, finally fit in – until a criminal mastermind known as the Machinist threatens to tear the group apart…

WHAT I THINK

“What I want from you,” he said, and Finley braced herself, “is your trust. Irrevocable and unshakable. I want you to put your life in my hands, and I want to be able to do the same without hesitation.”
Disturbed to her very soul, Finley could only shake her head. “You ask too much.” Put his life in her hands? He was deranged! A bedlamite for certain. A crooked grin curved his mouth.
“Too much? You strange and wonderful girl, that is the least I’ll ask of you.”

In the Girl in the Steel Corset we follow the adventure of Finley, Griffin and their friends whom all have some talents that normal people doesn’t have. Finley has been jumping from job to job, she always gets fired for one or another reason. But her last job ends with her fighting the son of her employer. And she beats him bad, really bad.
While she’s running away from the house, she crashes with Griffin and Sam. From there starts their adventure together against the villain called the Machinist. But who’s going to win that fight and what is it all about?

I had pretty high expectations for this book though I don’t know why? But for some reason I thought that this would be something as good as Gemina was for me. That might be the reason why this one was pretty disappointing, it really wasn’t that good. I mean I did enjoy reading but still it fell flat and I’d say it’s kind of average.

First of all she beat the s***t out of the son of her employer and got out of it without any consequences? Yeah, she was under the wings of the duke but I thought that there would have been at least some investigation for the matter, but nothing.
Next there was some kind of a love triangles going on and damn I was annoyed. I know I do like some love triangles but these were just painful. No one said anything to the other one involved, they just kept thinking by themselves “we can never be together, she/he does not even like me the way I like her/him” and I know I can’t be the only one who’d just want to get in there and give them a big fat kick in the arse and just scream “TELL HER/HIM!! OPEN YOUR MOUTH!”

I liked the story and plot otherwise. I enjoyed reading it even though it took forever to finish it. But it was kind of slow progress. For me it felt like there were parts that could have been left out of the book. Also when Finley was practicing with Griffin to control her “other half”, I feel like it was a tad too easy. Like how many times were they at it, two? And that’s it? Now you’re all done and can control it all the way even though just a while ago you had absolutely no control over it and you didn’t even know what you had done while the other half was in control.

I finished the book, I liked it. Even though there were things that annoyed me etc. But I finished and I do want to read the next one at some point. This book did end in kind of a cliffhanger but not that big or interesting that I’d feel the need to get the next one immediately.
All in all I’m still going to give this book the final rating of 3,5 stars.
