“Welcome to The Academy. We’re here to cure you, of everything.” That’s the teaser line on the cover of C.L. Taylor’s latest psychological thriller, The Treatment. How good does that sound?? Amazing, right??

“You have to help me. We’re not being reformed. We’re being brainwashed.” All sixteen year old Drew Finch wants is to be left alone. She’s not interested in spending time with her mum and stepdad and when her disruptive fifteen year old brother Mason is expelled from school for the third time and sent to a residential reform academy she’s almost relieved. Everything changes when she’s followed home from school by the mysterious Dr Cobey, who claims to have a message from Mason. There is something sinister about the ‘treatment’ he is undergoing. The school is changing people.

Determined to help her brother, Drew must infiltrate the Academy and unearth its deepest, darkest secrets. Before it’s too late.

The Treatment by C.L. Taylor is a fantastic read that I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller and one that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you read. Just thinking about the idea of this book sends shivers down my spine and remembering the thrilling scenes makes me feel like I’ve drunk five mugs of coffee. This book was awesome.

One thing I loved about the book instantly was that it didn’t waste any time jumping into the action and getting down to business. Seriously. I opened this book and by the tenth page, we already had a death and things were spiraling out of control. My eyes couldn’t read fast enough! Now that’s what I like to see (even if it is a bit of a shock!). I didn’t have a choice about whether I wanted to be dragged into the character’s mess. The book decided for me!

The Treatment kept me reading from beginning to end with barely a breath in between pages. I was hooked from the get-go, ever since Taylor brought out the big guns right at the beginning. I was intrigued about this idea of a reform academy and what would happen next. I was eager to follow the characters, not quite falling in love with them but definitely liking them. I also loved how the author didn’t look too much into love and relationships but left it slightly open for what ifs.

While the book was slightly predictable, it didn’t take away from the fast pace or the feeling that I was sitting on the edge of my seat. I still wanted to find out what would happen and how things would go down. I still wanted to punch those annoying characters in the face for the protagonist and still wanted the best for the main characters.

This was the first book I had read of C.L. Taylor but I don’t think this is where I’m stopping. I am really interested in seeing what other kinds of material she has brought out into the world. If you’re looking for a new thriller to read, then The Treatment is the book for you.

I rate The Treatment by C.L. Taylor 4 out of 5 stars.
