review 1: Pecan Pie Baby, by Jacqueline Woodson, was a great book to have read and I highly recommend it to any family that is receiving an addition. I thought it was a great story line that the author had in the book. I found it clever that every time the mother had a craving she turned it into a very special moment to have with her current daughter. As a hopeful future parent someday I hope to have this book given to me to have in my children’s library. Also as a future educator I wish to have this book available to my students that may be having this type of change in their household. This book can help so many different students and children deal with new and different changes in their life.

... morehildren, especially those that are experiencing a change in the home life – such as the arrival of a new baby. During this book, the main character, Gia, is expecting a new sibling. In the beginning of the story, she is very upset with the thought of someone else coming and taking her place. Everyone is excited about the baby – her mom, aunts, friends – everyone except her. Throughout the story, Gia’s mother uses pecan pie to make Gia feel connected to both her mother and the baby. This connection is enough to make Gia see that the baby is an addition to the family, not a replacement for her. She is finally able to accept the fact that the baby is coming. I would recommend this book for younger children, PreK to second grade. It is easily relatable to those ages, for the emotions are similar emotions of all children. I personally loved the book, I thought it was very realistic for a child. I liked that it really brought the child’s emotions and thoughts to light, such as the term “ding-dang baby.” However, I could not imagine necessarily reading it in my classroom. I think it would hold more value to have in my library as a resource for parents who are expecting another child. less
