review 1: Normally I prefer series instead of a singular book. Fortunately Sara Douglass did not disappoint. This book seemed to encompass so much at one time (almost too much in some parts) it was hard to put down. To often books feel incomplete when you reach the end, you want to know what happens next. For me that is one of the most frustrating feelings. I think the ending for The Devil's Diadem was well written and felt complete when the book was finished.
review 2: It was certainly bittersweet reading the last novel of brilliant historical fantasy Australian writer Sara Douglass. A lot darker than her previous novels The Devil's Diadem is an imaginative fantasy world of medieval England where a deceased Knight of the Templars had stolen the Devil's favourite crown
... moreand hell in the form of a horrific plague has swept England until he gets it back. His unsuspecting daughter Maeb the heroine of the tale is thus caught up in the events a fantasy tale filled with history, horror and the Old Ones. This is certainly not my favourite Douglass novel, it did seem a little slow in the first half and was quite confronting with its gruesome depiction of plague and death. It somehow did not forge the intense emotional connections between characters and the page turning urgency of some of her earlier work. That said the beautiful Douglass style of writing and attention to historic detail is evident however and when the story reached its denouement in the last fifty pages it was a rivetting tale, it just took a long time to get there.Sara Douglass certainly was a fantastic and unique writer of what I call historical fantasy. She has left a legacy in her body of work which it is hoped will be enjoyed for many years to come. She will be missed. 3.5 - 4 stars. less
