When I had first heard that Bryan Lee O’Malley was working on a new project, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to read it. O’Malley has earned a lifetime of appreciation from me for his brilliant debut comic, Scott Pilgrim. Then, when I heard that the new main character was a fashion blogger, I was more intrigued. Not that I care about fashion- except for that post where I did fashion– but, us bloggers have been highly unrepresented in media. Being a blogger is a whole other life. Anyways, it took me a while (too long) but, I finally picked up a copy of the first graphic novel and started reading Snotgirl.
Volume one of Snotgirl, Green Hair Don’t Care, collects the first five issues of the ongoing series. The title has received high praise from audiences and critics alike. Snotgirl is entirely different from O’Malley’s previous works- utterly different from most comics. Leslie Hung brings a fashionable life to the story, with her colourful artwork.
The story follows high profile L.A. fashion blogger, Lottie Person. With a massive undisclosed following, Lottie is considered at the centre of the fashion world. Her life seems perfect, especially since her biggest flaw is having enormous allergy attacks- hence the snot. But, when new people start entering her life, and she is put on a new, untested allergy medicine, things start to get bad. Like, murder-y bad.
Much like Lottie’s handle on the situation, big holes are leaving you wondering if Lottie is right in the head, or if everything is just average. But, we will need to read further to find that out. There is also the possibility that somebody is trying to destroy her life through many different aspects.
Lottie is lovable as all heck. I mean she is supposed to be this lovable blogger but, O’Malley does a great job of making her real- and fake, as much as she needs to be. In fact, a few of her blogging friends are people you have seen running around social media. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these highly female characters, for a middle-aged man, I still thought they were dope.
Mostly, I am interested in unravelling this mystery. The creators have done a great job of creating an intriguing story. Part of me thinks Lottie is nut-balls, and part of me hopes she is alright and gets revenge on whoever is messing with her. I want to give Snotgirl a 3.5/5 because it was better than good but could use an injection of the humour that made me love Scott Pilgrim. Either way, I would recommend this book to all my blogging friends, and of course any O’Malley fans.
